The Worst Days of my life...

My blogs are starting to follow my academic calendar. I haven’t been able to blog (again) during the semester and I guess its probably cause of all the pressure u r in and has nothing to do with finding the time which is a ridiculous excuse by my standards.

Anyways this semester was tough and I mean really tough. We had such boring courses and on top of that we had the horrible instructors. I ended up screwing up my GPA and that’s all I have to say about my studies cause I don’t want to look back at those horrible days. We had a few new people joining our class and they are the ones who did their BCS from IBA and are now back for their MBA degree. Most of them are nice but there are some with whom I as well my group members don’t get along well with.

These days Im enjoying my vacations or atleast was enjoying them but now Im getting tensed as we have to do our Internship this summer and so far I have been unable to find one. For the first time in my life I have been rejected in an interview and it’s a real morale breaker. I always had this inner confidence that if I get an interview call, I’ll get in but all this is changing and I don’t like it one bit.  I guess I just cant run away from IT as I still think like a software engineer and still love that world.

Anyways herez a list of memorable things that have happened over the past few months:

    • FIFA 07 PS2 championship: that’s how we relieve pressure, by playing FIFA on PS2 all night long with each other.
    • Went fishing with friends after the final exams and man that was fun and boring at the same time.
    • Nadal closes on his third consecutive Roland Garos title and the final is this Sunday and he is going to kick Federer’s ass…again :)

Don’t think of my life as boring, a lot of other interesting and important things have happened but I want them to stay private :P

    1st Semester @ IBA

its been a long time since Iv writen a blog... the last 4 and a half months have been really hectic IBA really gets the better of u and when they get it, they throw it in the trash bin... im back to doing assignments, quizes, hourlies, term projects, blah blah but these seem a lot tougher than Im used too or should I say was used too... anyways life at the IBA has been really great, studies are definately tough but they are all worth it...therez a huge bunch of people I can stand to be with and therz a bigger bunch I cant stand to be with...
so what has happened in the past 4 months...

    • August 1, 2006 Orientation Day - Missed it thanks to the rainfalls and the sucky KPT underpass designers...there was knee high water outside my place and there was no way I could have made it to IBA
    • August 3, 2006 Day 1 - It was raining outside, my car wasnt working and I got all wet by the time I reached the bus stop...so I headed back home, changed into my suckiest t-shirt and put a good one and a towel in the bag as I planned on changing it once I get to IBA but what do u know...there was a taxi waiting just for me downstairs I didnt get wet when I reached IBA and my hair and T-shirt were a total mess and I roamed around in that condition the whole day...yea I know it sucks no need to tell me :P
    • Week 1 - By the end of the first week my memories of the first few days were gone when I had a misserable time at the IBA...but at the end of the week I had adjusted and found good company to roam around with...
    • 1st Hourlies - I ended up messing most of them up as I didnt paid much attention to them...hey they were all n-1
    • BITS Elections - The studnet body that we MBA-MIS students belong to is called BITS (Business and IT Students). The elections were being held and the campaigns were on but at the end the VP, Treasurer and General Secretary were elected and so far they have proved themselves to be incompitent...havent done a single thing...morons
    • 2nd Hourlies - all of them went superb in a sense that they were a lot better than the first one except for the Marketing one which was a disaster and I wasnt the only one on that disasterous ship.
    • 3rd Hourlies - The pressure was really getting on, last hourly and u had to score good marks if u ever want to see ur GPA go above 3. but thankfully they all worked out for the best... got the highest marks in Marketing and IBF (Intro to Business Finance).
    • Welcome Dinner - Finally we got our welcome dinner... it was fun in its own way but not as much fun as we were expecting...
    • Projects Time - the toughest few weeks of my life...we had to work day and night just to meet the deadlines and projects were the worst of them all...every other day we had to submit a term report due and that week just drained all the batteries...but we did it, met all those deadlines.
    • Finals - Aaagghh finals are here...so much to do, so little time...when the hell are they going to end... just end... 3 hours paper... and all that shit was all I could think about and when they finally ended I couldnt even enjoy it cause of one riddiculous thing that happened in the last hour of the last paper... it sucks

well thats most of all that has happened, results have already started coming in and so far they haven been that great thanks to IBF...for the record I hate Finance...the next semester starts from Jan 4, 2007 and this time I'l try to blog more often...

    Last Day @ KalSoft

Today was my last day at work. I started working at Kalsoft in May last year and the last 14 months have had its fair share of ups and downs. It was a unique experience working there and I think I learned a lot. Apart from that the money was good and I enjoyed spending it but now I see that I wont be earning till my MBA ends, I regret not saving a sizeable amount.

Anyways the day didnt start as usual, we had a heavy downpour of rain yesterday and early morning and new heights were set. The underpass that our Government takes pride in development set a new world record when it completely submerged in water...hehe... I regularly take that way to work but today I had to choose a different route and getting to office didnt seem to be a problem it was getting back home... I was supposed to be at work by 10 as the CMMI L3 audit was scheduled for my project and I was half an hour late (hey I had a valid reason and so did everyone else) During lunch a few of my collegues forced yes forced me to treat them and I was left with another guy (who by the way is also leaving) and we had to treat them to lunch at Pizza Hut. I also had an Exit Interview scheduled for 15:00 and it went okay. Once all that was done I said my good byes to everyone, collected the Expereince letter and started one hell of a trip back home. It rained heavily during the day and had already been told that therez knee high water near my place. I didnt come across much water on the way however it all changed when I was within 5 minutes walk from my place. THe underpass that was completely submerged and the road going towards Teen Talwaar was filled with knee high water and I still dont know how I managed to drive my way through that much water. All eventualities came to an end and I was safely parked at home.

Superman Returns and a waste of 2.5 hours

last night I saw the new Superman Movie: Superman Returns.. I usually wait for the good print to come out before I actually see it but in this case it was different as Iv been waiting to watch this movie for sometime now and as soon as I saw the movie at the movie shop nearby I decided to get it even though it was a Cinema Print. I sat down at around 1am last night and wasted around 2 and a half hours of my precious life watching the stupid movie... The entire story line sucks and the movie as a whole... I just want more and more ppl. to watch it and curse the asshole who came up with the story and the others arses at Warner Brothers who approved it in the first place... Im not going to tell u why the movie sucks, I want u all to watch it and tell me  why u think that movie sucks...

Brandon Roth, the guy who played Superman played it okay but he could have played it better especially the Clark Kent part (not that there was much of it in it)... I fell that Tom Wellings from Smallville would have made a much better Superman but sacrifices need to be made if Smallville had to continue and with him playing Superman, Smallville wouldnt have been the same... The babe who played Lois Lane didnt had that Lois Lane thing in her... and dont get me started on Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) what the hell was he thinking, has he even read the Superman comics or not? Frankly speaking for an evil powerful, billionare dude Kevin Spacey made Lex Luthor look stupid and the way he acted...a guy with no acting experience would have acted better than he did...

A Pathetic movie and I know people will simply watch it cause "hey its Superman..." well lets hope the other 2 movies in line have a better story though I would prefer if they started from the begining and do not continue where this one ended cause no matter what u do, u can not ignore the stupid things theyv added to this story line...

    All Hail Rafa

finally a dream show down between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal is about to happen. Federer is a damn good tennis player but I beleive he is over credited cause personally I feel there is no competition out there or atleast there arent as good players as there used to be a decade ago.

Roger Federer currently hold 3 grand slam titles and has lost to anyone this season besides Rafael Nadal but most of them were on clay and Nadal is the best player on clay there is... most ppl didnt even thought that the number 2 seed would make it to the final of Wimbledon as they regarded him to be a purely clay player but he has silenced all of them up. I just want Nadal to win and I beleive he can do that... Federer needs to cry a little, I dont like him cause hez damn arrogant / proud and a sour looser (just see his face and the way he acts when hez loosing or havig a tough game).

Rafa is getting better and better and Im turning into a bigger fan of his... I kinda lost interest in watching tennis since Sampras retired and when the dominant days of Federer started, there simply was no point watching as u knew who the eventual champion would be...but then steps in Rafa and teaches him a lesson, hez not the best yet until he beats Rafa... go Rafa...Vamos Rafa

    IBA here I come...

June 15 2006: Its 1:00 am on and Im riting my blog about the day that just passed. This blog wouldn’t get posted till 24th as I don’t want to disclose at the moment what Im about to write now.

I applied for a full time MBA Program at Institute of Business Administration (IBA) and cleared my entrance test and had an interview today. I didn’t prepare much for the test but luckily I cleared it and got an interview call for today, June 14th. My reporting time was 10:30 and I was pretty nervous about it as IBA is one thing I really want to get into. The interview was scheduled for 11:00 and I arrived at the IBA City Campus at 10:30 just as they had instructed. All those who were supposed to be interviewed for the MBA-MIS program were asked to report to room 3 and wait there. My name was first on the list of those whose interview was 11:00 and I was expecting that it will start by 11 if not maximum by 11:30 but boy was I wrong. My turn to show them my previous educational mark sheets came at 12:00 and it went pretty smoothly, they just asked me to show them my BCS (Hons.) degree, transcript, intermediate and Metric mark sheet which I did and they simply noted down my GPA and percentage. After this another person there asked for the grading policy of PAF-KIET which I gladly did by simply showing him my transcript which had it all written in it.

Once the educational degree part was done I had to wait for I think around 15-20 minutes and they than asked all those who had passed the phase, which I just described to move to the next phase. I thought it was going to be the interview phase but infact it was the Group Discussion phase. There were 20 of us in the GD and they gave us a topic. The topic was “Will Automation help the in making the life of a common man easy in Pakistan”. For someone like me coming from a Computer Science background and working in a software house, automation seemed an abstract topic and more than that I had trouble classifying the Common Man. Anyways they gave us the topic and told us to gather our points in 1 minute (we weren’t allowed to write them down). After that they gave us each a minute to speak on the topic and it started in ascending order based on our seat numbers. The first guy spoke very well on it and after that if was hard to do better. I always believe that the first one to go at it is at an advantage because you don’t have to worry that the points you are going to raise have already been raised by some one else. My turn came after around 5 more people and I believe that I didn’t do to well on it however I did raise a very important point and that was about the infrastructure required for automation and mentioned the ease a common man will feel with automation and especially when he doesn’t have to carry all his documents for every damn thing from passport to driving license, etc. I spoke a little to fast a finished what I had to say before the minute was up and this was one of the first mistakes I made. After that people raised their views and when every ones turn was up they gave us all 10 minutes to debate among our selves over this topic. Everyone wanted to score and wasn’t waiting for his turn and was going around in the typical Pakistani fashion. I continuously kept my hand raised but when that didn’t get me anything I joined the crowd and started speaking in between, cutting other off. These 10 minutes were very confusing and I guess all they were looking for was the confidence which I had shown before this phase started by requesting that the fan behind me be turned off as its making a lot of noise…hehehe… After the open debate they us all a sheet of paper and 5 minutes to summarize what has been discussed and again I ran out of time as I was writing it in paragraph form when I should have written in bulleted form. With bulleted form you cover more in fewer words. That was the end of the Group Discussion phase and they took us to the computer lab and were asked to wait our turns for the interview.

Out there in the lab I started mingling around with others and read the online edition of DAWN as I had nothing better to do. From time to time those who went for the interview came back down to tell their friends what was asked in the interview. I noticed that those without work experience and computer science degrees were asked a lot of technical questions like: What is polymorphism, isomorphism, etc. One of them was asked to write a code in C# and I guess he was probably asked that cause he gave the impression or took the interviewer there. Anyways my turn came at around 14:00 and was taken to the room where the interviews were being held. In that room there were 4 tables and 4 interviews were being taken simultaneously by different persons off course. My interview was taken by Dr. Shams the head of their Center for Computer Studies (CCS). And one more guy and a lady. My interview went pretty well and they asked me about my life at PAF-KIET and I told them that it was very good and that when I started there it was a new university, the faculty was good and supported us a lot. I also told them that after we completed our degree requirements they even helped us in finding good jobs and make a name for ourselves in the industry. After that they asked about the teachers that thought us and I mentioned a few of mine. They then asked me if our Dean ever thought us anything. They asked me that cause our Dean used to be the Director of IBA CCS. I told them he didn’t teach us any course upon which they enquired if he teaches any. I told them that he do teaches from time to time and I guess we weren’t the lucky ones to learn from him… lolz…After that they looked up my place of employment from my form and asked if I was currently employed and I told them yes upon which they asked if I’l leave my job for the studies. That was the question I knew they were going to ask for sure and I told them exactly what I had thought of that, Education is my first priority and I’l quit my job for it. Im working at KalSoft and it has made a name for itself in the industry so they didn’t ask much about it. After that the lady asked me if I read newspaper and which sections. I told her that I do and usually read the front, back, international and editorial pages and there is always the sports section as Im into sports a lot. They asked me which sports are u in currently following. They thought I was going to say football but I told them that till last week it was tennis and Im now switching towards football and was infact watching Brazil vs Crotia match last night. Upon saying this the other guy (not the director) asked me what were my views about it and I told him that everyone says Brazil’s team is the best and they are going to lift the world cup again, but 1-0 wasn’t a very convincing win. I was trying to be cool and passed occasional smiles and all and I could see that they noticed it and passed a few back once in a while. The guy also asked me who I thought is going to win the world cup and I told him that I’l still side with Brazil. The guy also asked me what sports I play and I told him that I play cricked and used to play Basketball till school. Upon this the lady interviewer asked me which school and I told her that it was in Sharjah. She asked for the name and when I told her that she has a smile on her face I didn’t get to know why till after a minute. She asked me the year I left school and how was the standard at that time. It may seem a strange question but hold ur horses Im getting to that point. I said it was pretty good and she than told me that she studied from the same school and back in her time the standard was also very good. Now what are the odds of that, I haven’t met anyone who went to same school as I did since I came back from Sharjah and when I finally meet what I time it was to meet that person. She had all praises for the school and I agreed with her. This school thing took a few minutes of the interview. After this came the final questions, the lead interviewer, Dr. Shams asked what an MBA-MIS degree would do for me. I simply told him that I don’t plan on changing my field and will probably be doing something related to computers after I graduate. I told him that I need an MBA degree to climb up the hierarchy and with my technical background, an MBA degree and a work experience in a CMMI Level 3, Microsoft Gold Certified Partners company would be a plus point and organization will prefer me over others. I think he agreed on it and didn’t press on the subject any further. That was the end of the interview and they said with a smile that your results would be announced on 24th and so will this blog get posted aswell.

Im very optimistic after the interview and feel that I will make it into IBA and InshaAllah I will.

June 24 2006: The final result is out and thank fully Im on the list of selected candidates who will start their MBA in August 2006. The only thing left to do is pay up the fee. So I guess I would be resigning from KalSoft on Monday. Lets see how it goes.

    My Acer Extensa 6600

ah finally I get to blog from my new Laptop... my bro came back from Saudi Arabia last week to spend his annual vacations at home with us and I was shocked to c what he bought for me... he bought a Laptop for me... Iv been dying to get a laptop and thats what I got... he didnt actually bought it for me he bought it for him self but since he also got one from his office so he decided to give his personal laptop to me... :)

ok get ready to hear the configuration...

its an Acer Extensa 6600 series with a$ 1.6 GHz Intel Mobile Centrino processor, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB HDD, Wi-Fi, bluetooth, etc. However the thing I liked the most about it is that it came with a DVD RW Drive...cool

i spent the first week installing the OS and other stuff on it as it came with a Windows XP Home Edition and who needs that when u have the XP Enterprise edition. Installing Windows was a piece a cake but I made a huge blunder during it and formatted the drive which contained the original Windows Home Edition installtion CD and the laptop drivers... as soon as pressed the format button I remembered what Faraz Mahmood wrote in his blog about it (he has an even cooler Acer Ferarri Laptop) and it was a second too late... so here I was searching for its drivers online and it didnt took long to find them but it took a long time to download it at the sucky speed we get here on Dial Up... I could have downloaded it from my office but FTP is blocked there and the download link on Acer's website used FTP.

anyways everything up and running now, have even tried out the Wi-Fi at a friends place and its really hmmmmmmm convenient ;) no more wires getting in your way and mobility is no longer an issue... I think Im going to get myself one of those wi-fi routers

    Tour de Punjab

March 18th, the tour begins. Im at the airport on my way to attend a cousins wedding in Lahore, the wedding is on the 19th and valima on the 20th. I took a weeks leave from the office just to be there. It seems as if I only get to go to Lahore for weddings cause the last time I went there, it was to attend another cousins wedding and that was more than 3 years ago. Anyways I reached Lahore early morning and spent the afternoon & evening at my cousins place. I did went to my khalla’s house for a short time in between and to Liberty aswell (went with my mom and went there to roam around and kill time). A dholki was also planned for that night which was okay but the real fun was after the dholki when we all sat down and talked and talked for hours and than went to Purani Anarkali for kulfis and that after 2 am. We came back home after 3 and I straight away went to bed.

The wedding was next day and I ended up spending most part of the day at home and hardly needed to do anything as far as the wedding arrangements were concerned (they were all taken care off). The nikkah was scheduled for the afternoon after Zuhr and my afternoon was spent there. The guy who gave the khutba was really impressive. Hez a professor at LUMS and came only cause my cousins requested it to him. Let me tell u, the guy was really impressive he holds a degree from Columbia University and has spent the greater part of his life in the US and came back after graduating and spent 7 years in a Madressah and learned about Islam (and here we are who take this religion of ours for granted). That guy surely has the knowledge and the commitment towards Islam. Anyways back to the wedding, the venue was nearby and it was good (I mean the whole wedding was good) and I played the role of a driver to some extent and let me tell u one thing, the traffic there sucks…seems as if the city is filled with jangli’s with no road sense…and people say the traffic here in Karachi is bad…lets see them drive in Lahore and say that again. The food at the wedding was damn good. People say that therez something in the water there which increases ur appetite and that’s exactly what happened with me, I ate a lot more there than I usually eat here and those who have seen me know that Im not a big eater and have a less than average appetite (don’t count my appetite for Pizza’s). Therez a strict ban on serving meals at weddings here in Karachi but no such strictness seems to be in place over there and serving food at weddings is a common spectacle there. I have nothing to complain cause I enjoyed eating those meals J.

Monday 20th March: The valima was tonight and again I spent the whole day doing nothing while I should have been out roaming the city. I couldn’t do that cause didn’t have anyone who falls into my age group to go with, the only cousin of mine who could do that was busy with his studies. Finally the sun and valima time was approaching. We all got dressed and went to the valima, all had a little chit-chat and again fed our self to the delicious Lahori meals and again the food was damn good especially the kabab’s.

Tuesday 21st March: The wedding scene ended and my mum and sister were going back to Karachi in the evening. This was the first day I really went out, went to LUMS with my cousins and was totally impressed with it, the campus is just too good and u don’t really need to check out the studies there, u can hear applauses about it from everyone in the industry. My cousins gave me a tour of the campus which lasted for more than hour including the time spent at the lab burning the pics taken from my camera to a CD. Once that was all done I was back on my way home. After an hour of getting home I went to drop off my mom and sister to the airport. Oh I forgot to mention that there was another dinner at my mamu’s place (that’s where I was staying) and I after coming from the airport that’s where I was.

Wednesday 22nd March: There was nothing much to do and I spent most part of the day at home watching TV. Later in the evening I went out for dinner with my mamu, mami, cousins and their kids. We all went to the food street, not the Gwalmandi one but to another food street at Purani Anarkali.

Thursday 23rd March: I had a long bus ride waiting ahead of me. I was going to Islamabad through Daewoo Bus Express at 12. I reached the bus stop at 11:45 and just imagine my luck, I got the last seat on the bus which was at the end. There goes my comfi ride…well that’s what I thought but it wasn’t that bad. The trip from Lahore to Islamabad took 4 and a half hours. I was in Rawalpindi by 4:30 pm and from there I had to catch a shuttle to Islamabad. I ended up waiting half an hour for that cause I missed the first one. By 5:30 I was in Islamabad and my chachi picked me up from there. I went over to my Taya’s house. I saw their new home for the first time and it deserves every praise u get to hear about. The last time I was in this city was 7 years ago and back than I was just too young (and stupid) to enjoy being there. Even though I was born in Islamabad and spent the early years of my life there, I never enjoyed being there however this time it was different, I loved being there. Anyways back to thursday, my cousins at whose place I planned on staying were in Karachi (my home town/city) but luckily another cousin of mine reached Islamabad from Lahore, a few hours after I came so I went over to their place and spent the night there, watched a movie and stayed there.

Friday 24th March: I woke up early (11 am is early for me on an off day) and after breakfast went with my cousin to pick my chachi & cousins (they were also in town from Karachi) and had a fun time teasing my cute little cousin who was just shocked to see me (wish I had my camera with me to capture that look on her face). After that it was Namaz time and I was on my way to the Mosque (don’t give me that shit about using the word mosque). Once we were back from prayers, we had dinner and it was after that when the real trip to Islamabad started (all thanks to my cousins). We went for a drive in city and I took loads of photographs (thanks to my bro for sending me my own digi-cam). We first went to Quaid-e-Azam University from where we picked up another cousin of mine (yes I have a lot of cousins). After picking her up, I was showed all the major buildings and monuments that are in Islamabad and I took a picture of each and everyone including the Margalla Tower (the building that fell down in the tragic earthquake that struck our great nation last year). We also went to Damn-e-Koh (that’s a mountain / peak) in Islamabad and that’s where I took a lot of photographs.

Later that night we went out for dinner and till that time, I had it all planned out… I was going back home to Karachi early morning from there but as soon after that I got a call from my cousin in Lahore, who came by road all the way from Karachi in her car, that his son is sick and she’l be going to Karachi by air and someone has to bring her car back with her husband and that someone is me…so I immediately cancelled my seat and started planning for the morning. Went to bed early as I had to catch an early bus to Lahore.

Saturday 25th March: Woke up very very early at 5:30 am… my cousin dropped me off at the bus terminal and I took a 6am bus to Lahore… it wasn’t full so I got a seat in the middle and spent half of the trip sleeping and half of it watching a movie which I had already seen it… I reached Lahore at 11am…took a shower, had a breakfast cum Lunch and we were on our way to Karachi by road. This was perhaps the most adventurous part of the whole trip. I drove almost 40% of the trip and the road was better than okay, the average road speed throughout the trip was more than 100kmh. It rained heavily on the way for almost an hour and only because of that we lost 3 hours of the trip in the flooded streets of Multan. Once we were out of Multan things went smoothly as u can expect, we didn’t cover as much distance as we were expecting.

Sunday 26th March: The road trip continues… at 2am we were in Rahim Yaar Khan, we were 4-5 hours behind schedule (didn’t have one). Over there we had a cup of tea and finding a place for that was tough, everything was closed at that time in that small city. We also planned on spending the night there but instead decided to drive at night as well but people there advised us not to travel at night as the area from Sadiqabad to Sukkur is very dangerous to travel on at night. That’s because a lot of robberies take place over there at night. We decided to listen to there warning and stopped over at Sadiqabad. Since we only had to sleep for a few hours as it was already past 3am and sun was about to rise, we decided not to get a room and instead spent those hours sleeping in Mosque adjacent to a Total’s Petrol Station. We only slept for a few hours and were back on the road at 5am…covered a lot of distance in the morning and crossed Sukkur, Hala, Hyderabad and a few other places and reached Karachi at 2:30pm. It was good to be back home, the dugged up roads, garbage dumps, hot weather, etc. were all the sites I had missed over the past week.

The conclusion: The trip was more than an adventure I could have dreamed about…had a fun time in Lahore and Islamabad. The only regret I had while in Islamabad was that I didn’t get to drive my Taya’s Mercedes but don’t worry will do that the next time Im there. The drive from Lahore to Karachi was the best part of all…Iv decided that Im going to do this one more time and will drive from Karachi to Lahore and beyond…soon

    January 30

    Rock for a Cause

Lets make it a night to remember… that’s exactly what it was, a night to remember in Karachi. It was the 29th of January 2006 and for the first time a notable western singer performed in Pakistan and it was no other than the Canadian Bryan Adams. That’s right Bryan Adams rocked for a cause and I was there. I wasn’t ready to miss this show but I wasn’t ready to pay for the show and I didn’t, got the tickets free of cost from a friend of a friend. Thanks dude. Anyways the show was just tooooo damn good. Bryan Adams performed for a cause and it was Shahzad Roy (who we all know sucks) who bought him to our town for a charity event. More than 10,000 people and I was one of them rocking to the beat of Summer of 69 and loads of other tracks. He performed for around 2 hours live and boy did that guy had the stamina to perform for such a long time without a break. Our local Pakistani singers need to learn something from him, they can hardly perform for an hour and most of the time its not even live. Those phonies have a recording running in the background and are only lip singing.

It was a sight to see, the Karachities showed that they can handle such events. More than 10,000 people and no phadda’s or anything and there was hardly any security personnel in the crowd. The notable comments came from none other than Shahzad Roy at the start of the show when he said “We have proved one thing here that Karachi is a safe city for events like these” and he is right about that. Now I cant wait for such events in the future and lets hope that U2 comes and performs here.

So how did my journey to the far off place started. Im not joking Country Club is a far off place. I drove 140 KM that’s day. It all started a night before the concert when a friend of mine (Saqib) told me that he was unable to arrange tickets for me. I was disappointed but believe it or not I knew that something would come up. So the very next day (the day of the concert) Saqib comes up to me in the morning and says “ho geya” it turned out that a friend of his wasn’t going to the concert and gave 4 tickets to Saqib and I got one of them. We picked up the tickets from his friends place and than our journey started. Came back home, got dressed and we were on our way to the Country Club. I picked up my car and was the one driving. Had to pick up a few people on the way that led me to the 3 corners of Karachi. First picked a friend from DHA Phase 1, than another friend from SMCHS, another from Gulshan and than drove some 30 km to the Country Club. It took us more than us approximately one hour and 30 minutes just to get there. At 19:00 we were finally inn, standing inside the venue along with thousands of people.

The show started a little later than the schedule time and Shahzad Roy came and sang a few of his looser songs. The only thing worth noting is that he didn’t performed for his personal glory and only performed for a half an hour a little less or more. The real show started when Bryan Adams came up to the stage at around 21:15 and immediately started rocking. We were expecting that he would start of with Here I am but instead sang a song from his new album, which by the way I haven’t heard it and didn’t recognized the song. Bryand Adams than shared 2 song with Shahzad Roy and after that it was all Bryan Adams. The crowd was going crazy and the way they made the stage was just too cool. The lightings were superb (the couples really enjoyed themselves :)…) the arrangement was extra-ordinary, a superb job by the management. Bryan wasn’t ready for the Pakistani public cause they refused to leave even after he left the stage. They kept calling him out and the poor soul came out 3 times just for us. He didn’t came out the 4th time infact on his 3rd time he started off by saying “this is my last song after that I have to go and eat something…” and his last two songs came without the support of his band and that was perhaps the best performance of the show and Cloud Number 9 was just too much to handle. The concert finally ended with a fireworks show and that too was just too good. The event was superbly managed, organized and held and the final fireworks knock with the fireworks was totally unexpected.

At 23:30 we were back in the car on our way home but decided to make a pit stop for Karhii and after that I dropped off my friends at their homes and at 02:30 in the morning I was at home, exhausted and lying on my bed.

    CISA Examination Result

10:00 - January 26, 2005 I checked my email inbox and there it was, an email from Dept: Certification of ISACA. As soon as I saw it, my heart beat increased and I was scared shitless while opening the email. The subject line didnt mention anything that would tell me whether I passed it or not. Anyways I started reading the email and it was after 5-6 lines that I the text finally came. "We are pleased to inform you that you have successfully passed the CISA Examination...". All my prayers payed off and thanks to Allah I have cleared the examination. Iv made a few promises to Allah that I have to fulfill inreturn for this.
    CISA Logo
I got 78% while the passing percentage is 75. So in a way I barely passed but it doesnt matter as long as I have passed it. Dont know what lies next but hopefully it will be good.

    My digi-cam story...

My bro came back from Dubai to spend Eid with us. I went at 3 in the morning to the airport to pick him up and I was really excited cause he was bringing along a digital camera for me. For the past few years ever since Digi-Cams came up I always wanted one and I finally got my wish…woohoo..

Anyways the camera is great. It’s a Sony Cybershot DSC-W5

    • 5.1 megapixels
    • 3x optical zoom
    • Carl Zeiss optics lens
    • 32 MB internal memory

The results are great and why wouldn’t they be, the lens comes from the makers of best lens out there. Red Eye is the only issue that I have come up with so far and this has also been mentioned in various reviews that I have read about this model online.

Ok enough about the camera, its real test will come tomorrow on Eid when I’ll actually have photos to take.

    Big Fish

a friend of mine is a lot into fishing and we used to make fun of him and laugh over his fishing stories... all his stories were about fishing or somehow got related with his fishing adventures...aaj tumharay bhai nay yeh machlee pakree...itnee barri..itna weight...record bunaya hai tumharay bhai nay... blah blah... well today I think may be the last day we will ever make fun of him over his fishing adventures...

at around 22:30 I got a call telling me to come down stairs. We had made plans about going out after lunch and figured that must be the reason for that...but as soon as I stepped out of the lift...there lied 2 huge fishes, Marlin's to be exact and each of them must be around 6 feet long or more... it turned out Aamir had caught those fishes and once again have set a record... we still havent figured it out why he bought those fishes in the building... I tihnk probably to show it to us and for once seal our lips...and if that's the case, than he has succeeded... there were a lot of people taking snaps most of them from our buildings, some of his fishing partners, his friends and a few people from GEO. Everyone including me and the boyz had his pics taken standing those fishes... The fishes were weighed there and one of them weiged 75 kgs and the other one must have weighed the same...

Im writing the title of this blog as Big Fish cause those fishes were really big and the movie Big Fish was on TV a couple of hours ago, and I watched it again for the 5th or 6th time...

All things must come to an End...

4 years ago in Fall 2001, a bunch of young men and women enrolled in the Undergraduate program at PAF-KIET. All trying to figure out their place in the universe. Yesterday most of them bided their farewell to a place that has been their home away from home. 17th December 2005 was our convocation day, the day when we got our degrees and can claim to be graduates.

The time we spent at PAF-KIET will surely be remembered by us. We saw the institute rise from its infancy to a center of learning. We hated that place for as long as we were in it but now looking back at those years, I realize that they weren’t that bad. I wouldn’t trade those years for anything. The friendships formed there will surely last throughout my life time. There were 28 of us in the first semester but regretfully only 7 of us graduated that day, some were enrolled in a shorter version of the program and graduated last year while the others are yet to graduate. A class of 28 saw its numbers reduced over the years with some of them leaving the institute while others were kicked out.

The only thing I regret is that our class was never a class. We never really connected in a way that you connect with the people you are studying with a spending a great portion of your day with. Our group was a group, we did everything together from sitting together in the class, hanging out during free sessions, going out to the Dhaba for chai and Anda ghutaala, going out for dinner, study nights, projects, etc. you name it and we did it. If it wasn’t for my group mates, I would have gone insane over the years. We were all ready to go out on a short notice, no excuses. Our group was of Me, Khurram, Owais and Arsalan. We had a few other people that came in and left Kashif and Asher. Kashif still hangs around with us and like us is always ready to hang out but unlike us hez never up for studies (no offence dude). It would be selfish of me to miss out on the other class mates of mine who were not always but most the time with us and deserve to be named here, they were Umair,  SAM and Muzammil. Apart from that Sanya, Sadia, Sana, Nawaf, Asad, Ali, etc. hanged around with us inside the campus.

The other thing I wont forget our my teachers, we had great teachers like Sir. Usman Waheed, Amanullah, Arshad Baig, Sohail Imran, Emad Abdullah, Rauf Malick, etc. Some of the others were SOB's and unsincere to their work and their only aim in life was to get some respect the only way they could and i.e. by being teachers. I do feel sorry for KIET, when we joined it, the Computer Science Department was the best, it had a damn good faculty who was sincere to their work and wanted to make us something. Then we saw its decline with our Head of the Department leaving and the good part of the faculty followed his steps.  Im really thankful that I had the opportunity to learn something from them before they left. Regretfully now going back to the institute and looking at the students make me feel sick, what the hell are they teaching them, those assholes dont know anything.

Now, coming to the last part of my blog: The Convocation Day

The day didn't started like everyother day, it was my convocation day and had to be different. I reached the institute around 17:00 (30 mins late, and it was all worth it). Upon reaching I mingled around with my batch mates and the other people who were in the convocation with us. We followed the program schedule that was handed to us on the rehearsal day which included a group photo session. After the photos session we formed the Academic Procession and stood in it for hours before it finally marched. These are the kind of things that make you hate PAF-KIET. Anyways the procession marched on with the arrival of the Chief Guest Dr. Hamida Khuro, Education Minister, Sind. The chief guest was supposed to be the Governor of Sind but he couldn’t make if due to the PM being in town. We settled down on the chairs next to the stage and waited for about 2 hours for the boring, never ending speeches to end and our names to be called. Finally the speeches ended and they started calling us on the stage. The convocation was not perfect, nothing is. They messed up here and there with the biggest being our names being called out of sequence. During the rehearsals they kept on saying don’t change your seats once you are settled as this may lead to your names being called out of order. Well it seems those idiots didn’t need our help to mess it up as they messed up the names list and we were called out of sequence. The convocation was so damn boring but what really pissed me off was the way our names were called up by Arshad Nadeem. He was calling our names as if someone had a gun up his ass and would shoot it while the nozzle was still inside his ass. He was calling as if he was being forced to call the names. Anyways coming back to the point, my name was finally called and I went up and collected my Degree from the Chancellor of our institute, who also happens to be the father of a good friend of mine. I walked off the stage leaving all the worries behind for the day and waited for the graduation ceremony to end and the academic procession to leave and finally it did. After all this we now had the time to meet our friends and families who were there to see us graduate. Owais, Kashif, Umair, Saniya and Sadia were also there and Kashif was the most usefull of them all. He was holding numerous cameras (one of thme was mine) and was taking our pictures throughout the event. On a rough count he must have taken atleast a thousand pics that day. Soon after dinner we (me, Khurram, Arsalan, Owais, Kashif & Umair) left the institute and went to indulge where we had sheesha & drinks and talked about the old days and the convocation day :p. We sat their for like more than an hour and our day wasn’t over yet. All of us except for Umair came over to my place to spend the night and we watched a movie, The Dukes of Hazard and finally went to bed at around 4 in the morning. Our day finally came to an end and with it came the end of our undergraduate life. They came and went by so quickly. I wished they would have lasted a little longer. I wished I could correct the mistakes I made during those years. I wish those years never come back again as I only want their memories to remain and nothing else.

    Pakistan vs England, 3rd ODI

what a match... After a long time an ODI cricket match was played in Karachi. It was Pakistan vs England and what a match it was. The visitors were outclassed in all aspects of the game. Pakistan batted first and put up their highest ODI score to date 354 in 50 overs and that was just too much for the English men to handle. A fine batting by almost everyone made sure that Pakistan won with Kamran Akmal setting an example by scoring another century (the last one came in the 2nd ODI 3 days ago)... all this was hapening and I can produly say that I was there. I was one of 33,000 ppl. watching the match in the stadium. Took a day off from work just to be part of the crowd and I have no regreats... Throughout the match we were chearing for our countries team and at the same time appreciating the opponents team aswell. The whole crowd came to enjoy the match and unlike the Aussie's and Indian's who are known for being cry babies and only chear for their team, the Pakistani crowd cheared for everyone. Even the commentaitors and the English team aknowledged it by saying that they had a noisy crowd and cheared at every piece of marvelous shot, ball or fielding. All in all I had a great day and cant wait for another match to be played back in Karachi.

Certified Information System Auditor (CISA) Examination

That was the real deal... The CISA Examination was held yesterday, Dec 10, 2005 all around the world and I was one of the people who appeared for it... Im still not sure how it went but Im hoping to clear it so do pray for me...

The paper started at 9:00 AM but we had to report to the examination hall (Avari Towers, Karachi) before 8:30 as that was the time instructions for the exam started... it took around 35 min's for the instructions and the paper started at 9... The first hour went by so quickly and when it ended I was behind 10 Questions that should have been done....The paper had a total of 200 questions all MCQ that had to be done in 4 hours. I should have completed atleast 50 Q's per hour but was already laggin behing a good 10 questions when the first hour ended and it was then I realized that its nothing like the mock test (which by the way also had 200 MCQ's and I finished it in 3 hours). Pressure was taking its place and I was so nervous and scared at the same time, at the start of the examination. The last time I felt that way was way back in my Intermediate Examination days and had never felt anything like it throughout my university life. Anyways after the first hour I started picking up pace and was back on schedule when the 2nd hour ended, which bought some relief with it. During the paper I was marking down the questions whose answer I was not too sure about to review it later but didnt make the mistake of not marking it on the scantron sheet and thank God I didnt cause when the last 30 minutes were I had around 35-40 MCQ's to do but thankfully I completed those with 5 minutes to spare but it left me no time to review the answers that I planned on reviewing at the end. So the paper finally ended and it was the longest examination I had ever given with all my previous examinations had a maximum of 3 hours to complete. Sitting in one place for 4 hours concentrating on the exam and not letting ur mind wander of places u cant afford it to wander off too was really tough and for the time being I dont intend on appearing for any such examinations in the next year or so.

With the conclusion of the CISA examination bought another chapter of my life to an end. Preparing for it was a unique experience in its own way. I was preparing for it through an institute that deals with offering courses to executives. Studying with them was nothing like I had done in the past, I was the youngest among them at only 22 with the average course participants being in their early or mid 30's. This age bracket left little space for me to socialize as apart from preparing for the same course we had nothing in common. All an all it was a good experience and I wish all those who prepared or did not prepare with me and appeared for the examination all the best.

The last but not the least thing, I celebrated my freedom by going to the Pakistani Premier of the movie The Legend of Zorro and thanks to my cousin who provided me with the invitation only passes to it. The movie in my views good but not excellent and was just what the doctor prescribed :) It made me feel like the way I used to feel, careless and free

Well thats all I have to write do pray that I clear the exam.
    Adios

    CISA Mock Test

7 days to go... My CISA Certification Exam is on 10th and from today I wont have to worry about office for a week. My leaves are supposed to start from this monday and will last till the end of the working day of the week (friday)...

Im hoping to capitialize these days and with full commitment prepare for the exam... lets hope I can do that... I didnt go to office yesterday cause I had a mock exam in the morning for which I hardly studied the way I should have studied. I was hoping to test all that I have prepared over the past 3 months and try my luck and see where I stand... I know Im making excuses trying to convince my self that its okay if u r not ready... I heard somewhere that writing about something you have no control over makes you feel better, but that doesnt exactly fit over here as I did have control over it and I simply choose something else...damn u Hashim

Well anyways the mock went okay got 138 out of 200 which as per my instructor is the average score one gets in the mock exam...I should have dont better than average as the real thing is much bigger than the mock... I only went through the first 3 chapters (the 3rd one was just a read through) and based on that I think I can clear the real thing only if I study hard... lets hope I can do that...

James Blunt - You are beautiful

Just heard this great song and the lyrics are beautiful... somehow defines the moments in every men's life...check out the lyrics below and relate its lyrics with moments in ur life... (only non-Mummy Dadi bacha's would have exprienced it)

James Blunt - You are beautiful

    My life is brilliant.
    My love is pure.
    I saw an angel.
    Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
    She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
    'Cause I've got a plan.

    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

    Yeah, she caught my eye,
    As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
    Fucking high,
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.
    You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
    You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.

    My Nokia 3230

Im totally falling in love with my new cell phone... recently bought myself a Nokia 3230 and the phonez amazing, it has everything that you want and if it doesnt have it than u can install softwares on it that will provide you with what you want. I had a Nokia 6600 before this one and that was also a good phone but it was just too big (in terms of breadth) and looked quite awkward inside the pocket of your pants (not jeans :p).

3230 has a Symbian OS, bluetooth, infrared, radio, MMC card, loudspeaker, 1.2 MP Camera, etc. has a sleak look with amazing screen quality (65k colors). Its perhaps the best buy if you are looking for a Smart Phone and would highly recomend this phone to anyone thinking of buying one.

Wedding Asia's opening ceremony with a Fashion Show...

I just came back from an Fashion show... the fashion show was held at Expo center, Karachi to mark the opening ceremony of Wedding Asia. Wedding Asia is a 3 day exhibition starting from tomorrow, featuring all sorts of exhibits related to wedding. Dresses, Jewelery, Shoes to name a few.

The fashion show was very posh, filled with designers and models... the show was very well arranged and the entry was restriced to a couples only pass... the passes were limited a well but luckily for me, my cousin was the one arranging the whole exhibition and entry was the least of my problem there...Depak Parvani, Amir Adnan, Nomi Ansari, HSY, etc. were a few designers whose models did a cat walk there... even the show was good but I was bored as the plan to attend it all happened in such a rush that I couldnt contact any of my friends and ask them to tag along... and apart from that being among the fashion industry people made me a little uncomfortable...being there so close to them made me thank God that Im not like them... men talked, walked, dressed and acted like women and vice versa...its like they are questioning God, why he made them the way they are...

Anyhow the show was good, had a good time but did get bored a little at times...just enjoyed the exprience, watched models cat walk (not all of them pretty) didnt even know a single one or their name cause Im really not into such stuff...and yea I came to know that big names were there Vanesay's just the name I can recall (all thanks to Ali Azmat) but trust me top models were there on the stage...
